God tells us that He created us to seek Him (Gen 2:7). He created us like Himself (Gen 1:26-27)—we are made for connection and relationship. Just as God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in perfect unity, He made us for relationship with Himself and all of creation (Gen 2:19-24). So, we seek Him, the One who made us, to worship and offer thanks.
Except we don't.
Sometimes, we feel restless.
Sometimes, we feel angry.
Sometimes, we don't believe He's worth seeking.
Or maybe we are just easily distracted, forgetful, or lazy.
Yet, the Bible tells us repeatedly that if we seek God, we'll find Him. That's a good indication it might be worth considering.
God promises that if we seek Him, we'll find Him (Jeremiah 29:12-14, 1 Chronicles 28:9, Isaiah 55:6-7, Proverbs 2:1-6, Psalm 9:10, Ezra 8:22, Matt 6:33, Matt 7:7-8, Matt 13:44-46).
It's a 100% guarantee. No matter how we look for Him, if we look, we will find Him.
Easiest game of hide and seek ever.
I have appreciated Ann Voskamp, in her book One Thousand Gifts, pointing out the story of Moses in Exodus 33:20-23. God sticks Moses in the space between rocks as He passed by to protect Moses from the fullness of His glory. The darkness of the moment was the result of God covering Moses. After God had passed by, He removed His hand, and the darkness dissipated. Even though it was dark for Moses, God was close by and with good intent.
God's intent for us, like Moses, is goodness. In addition to promising that we'll find Him, He also promises to be good to us, "The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him." (Lamentations 3:25).
What does it mean to be good to someone?
According to Merriam-Webster, it means having their best intention in mind, bringing out the best in them, and treating them fairly.
God promises all kinds of specific goods to us:
He'll give us rest (Matt 11:28)
He'll be with us (Matt 28:20)
He will hear us and give to us (Mark 11:24, John 14:13-14, John 15:7)
He will give us light (John 8:12)
He will be faithful to us (1 Cor 10:13)
He will give us peace (Phil 4:7)
He will meet our every need (Phil 4:19)
He will forgive our sins (Col 1:14)
He will help us (Hebrews 2:18)
He will intercede for us (Heb 7:25)
He will draw near to us (James 4:8)
He will claim us as His children (1 John 3:2)
He will present us blameless (Jude 1:24)
He will dwell with us, to wipe away every tear and to get rid of death, crying, and pain (Rev 21:3-4)
When I read that list, I think, "Yes! That's what I want—rest, belonging, peace, someone to carry the sorrow for me and care for me." That's just all a bunch of goodness.
So, if we seek God, we'll find Him. If we find Him, He is good to us.
So, what's stopping you from seeking God today?
(Aren't you just a little curious about where you might find Him?)
